How To Rescue A Pet

There are several ways a person can rescue a pet or even just HELP rescue a pet. The desire to help is the first step. It’s not always feasible for everyone to take in a new pet but they still want to help somehow and there are several options.

  • Fostering a pet is an option. This can range from helping pets cope with their anxiety in a home environment to being a half way house while the animal’s care takers find a home for it.
  • Some animals need medical attention but can get that care in a home environment with the right person to monitor the pet.Your vet or local animal hospital may be looking for such individuals to give a loving environment while the animal gets better.
  • Simply volunteering your time to a rescue organization is an option as well. That doesn’t always mean just answering their phones (but it could). Expect some grunt work (but that’s not always the case either).
  • Spreading the word helps. Express to others the need for volunteers, fostering pet parents, and rescue homes for orphaned pets on your social media feed or to your friends verbally. Taking a position for animal welfare in conversation, discussion and Social Media… HELPS.
  • Advocate for positions that you believe in and let others know you care about those issues.

All of this HELPS in some way, shape, or form, to point the needle in the right direction for the benefit of all pets, their welfare, care, and future.

  • OR another option is giving a pet a new home.

Where to Rescue a Pet

Are you looking for a pet or an animal companion? Have you considered searching with your preferred search engine or social media network? For example, if you are using Google, you can search for terms like “cat rescue” or “dog shelter“. Add your location to the keywords and you’ll receive more local results (if Google doesn’t already do this for you). If you know where your local shelter is, then head on down and take a look at who’s available for homing.

Social Networks Too!

Hey, did you know that many rescue organizations have themselves setup on social networks specifically so they can reach more people and more potential homes for their animals. Utilize your preferred social network service (ie: Facebook, Twitter, etc) to look for these organizations the same as you would a normal search engine, using the same keyword combinations. Social networks all have pages setup for rescue organizations. Reach out to them. These places are trying to reach out to you.

Are you considering fostering animals?

That’s fantastic! Cats and dogs not your thing? There are other animals that may need foster care. Animals that may be more at home on a farm or in a bird cage. There’s all kinds of animals that may need fostering. Looking for a place you want to work with for fostering animals is not that much different than simply looking for a pet. In fact, you should follow the same advice as listed above. Start with search engines and social networks. Don’t forget to add your location to the keywords for more localized results (if Google doesn’t already do this for you).

There are some pros and cons to fostering animals and there’s some preparation that needs to take place (whether you have other pets or not). Do your research for a better transition for the animal and yourself. Foster animals are usually only looking for a home to stay, but if the animal requires care, you may need to adjust your home to accommodate.
